A guy I know just followed up a comment about how it's ridiculous that people find art in cars and get excited about them with a comment about how Skrillex is a better musician than both Beethoven and Jimi Hendrix.

There are no words.

To be honest, Skrillex is nothing, just a kid being a flash in the pan.

Is it bad that I actually like Skrillex?

I mean, I don't consider his music to be any good, and he's nowhere near worth mentioning in the same sentence as any of the rock legends... But I like mindless driving music with a heavy beat.

I wasn't actually too upset about the mention of Skrillex or even the fact he chose to give Beethoven as an example; it's his general attitude of Dubstep, Dubstep, Uber Alles that is really irritating.

It kinda is because there are other artists that actually do work to make their tracks happen. Skrillex uses a lot of pre-packaged crap in programs like Fruity Loops, distorts them into a simple loop, and presses play when in "concert". There are literally HUNDREDS of artists who make similar styles of music but actually have talent and put forth effort which leads to their music having their "signature" if you will.

If you want to check out my personal favorite - SGX a lot of his stuff is free too.

Some people have no comprehension of what art is. Some people have no comprehension of what being a musician entails. Some people don't understand what it takes to compose a symphony. I can guarantee that Skrillex would not know what to do if you told him to score a piece for an orchestra. I also wonder if Skrillex even bothers to use Ableton Pro to live mix his music on stage or just plays a recording that he pantomimes acting hard core to? Kids these days. I'm sure that same guy would try to talk shit on John Cage or David Borden. . .

There's definitely others that make better music, and there's certainly a lack of creativity in his music, but it's kind of like McDonalds. You know it's not good, but it's always ok. It's a known quantity and is easy to find.

I'll look into SGX though, looks like theres a few albums on RDIO. I'm always up for finding new artists to listen to.

But is Skrillex better than Mozart? (hint: NO)

Seriously though, I think that guy's beyond saving

Hardly fair. I'm not a huge Skrillex fan, but his music is art as much as Beethoven's music is art. I'd be interested to see what Beethoven would do if he had a turntable, synth, and laptop set in front of him (aside from dying of shock).

Now, if the question is "Who's music has had a larger and more lasting impact on the art of music, as well as society as a whole?". Well now, that's a completely different question (One that I'm sure the idiot that made the comments quoted by OP would seemingly get wrong).

That man needs to be tied down and have the sides of his head shaved, then forced to wear your aunt's nerdy glasses. Let's see if anyone will remember Skrillex in another few weeks.

Granted, I listen to what some would call questionable music that really is more art than it is music per se. But what I was getting at was from what I've heard of Skrillex, it is the same songs just remixed over and over again with nothing really new. If you go and see Skinny Puppy live, they are actually playing instruments live and creating the music you hear at the show on the stage. With Skrillex I'm not so sure that is the case.

With the comment I made regarding John Cage and David Borden I was more referring to the fact that they pioneered the whole minimalist movement which in turn gave birth to what is now called trance and a vast majority of electronica. Well not so much Cage, he was just a pioneer of found sounds and poly rhythms.

Music is a highly subjective topic, but there are some "artists" out there that are purely made from marketing data and algorithms that predict trends to cash in. I will admit to trying to listen to Skrillex at one point in time, but I only found like 4 songs that each had like 10 remixes and I totally lost interest and respect. To each their own though right?

"To each their own" indeed, which is why I find statements like "Some people have no comprehension of what art is." to be in bad taste
